Actually, Xyz is the previous format. We're currently into "Pendulums", a mechanic that's still trying to gain ground.

We have preconstructed decks of the two you mentioned, but completing the sets will require the boosters or the singles.

He's investigating the prebuilt stuff, grabbing some Infernities and the Evol.

They're currently restricted to five major groups.

First is an archetype called the Performapals, creatures that modify stats, but their ability to Summon is piss at the moment.

Second is the "Yousenjyuu" or "Hermit Yokai", a group of WIND-Attribute weasels that excel at high speed attacks and bounce slash destruction effects.

Third is the "Normal" Pendulums, solid ranges, but they're most vanilla cards that can be searched with Reinforcement of the Army, Summoner's Art and Fossil Dig, with few meaningful effects at the moment.

Fourth is the rumored "Odd-Eyes" and "Gazer" groups. Not much is known about them other than a kid from a backwater defeated a major Pro Circuit champ with them. Supposedly before all the other Pendulums came out.

Fifth is the Qliphorts, a group of otherworldly ships that use their abilities to play like the Monarch group. They're Earth Machines.

I have heard mentions of a "DD" but no specifics.

Design wise, they're interesting. Effect wise, they're just Barbaros' Stat modification meets the effects of Monarhcs.

Their boss is essentially a giant spider ship.

"A badass one. And, well, I think earth machines don't REALLY sound up my alley?"

... Hrm, Badass. Typically, Fire and Dark decks are best at that, with some Earth Decks.

"Yeah, that's unfortunately what I was thinking. Running Fire Fist right now, but I want some flexibility, you know? Especially around here, where decks could literally save your life or soul or whatever."

Hrm. For you, I'd recommend the following...

Dark World, Steelswarm, Infernity, Dark Scorpions, Jinzo, Amazoness, X-Sabers, Dododo, Heroic Challengers, Ultra Athletes, Infernoid, Evols, Hazy Flames, Jurrac, Battlin' Boxers, Flamvell, and Lavals.

He... starts grabbing all of those preconstructed decks as you mention them, looking at them, then putting some back, ending up with Dark World, Infernity, Heroic Challengers, Ultra Athletes, Infernoid, Hazy Flames, Battlin' Boxers, and Jurrac, in addition to the Evol deck he had earlier.
